Overview

The Scaled Dove is a small, ground-feeding dove widespread across open country in Brazil and neighboring regions of South America. Its common name refers to the distinctive scaled or scalloped pattern created by dark feather edges across the neck and breast, a pattern visible even at a modest distance in good light.

Identifying the Feather

The neck and breast feathers are pale greyish-brown, each tipped with a dark crescent that creates an overlapping, scale-like texture-this is the species' single best field mark. In flight, a rufous-chestnut patch flashes on the primaries and underwing. The crown and nape are plain grey-brown without the scaling seen lower down, and the tail shows dark outer feathers with pale tips. Compare with the Picui Ground Dove, which lacks the scaled breast pattern and instead shows plain grey underparts with dark wing spotting.

Plumage & Molt

Sexes are similar, though males often show slightly bolder, darker scaling on the breast than females. Juveniles have a more diffuse, less crisp scaled pattern until their first molt sharpens the feather edging. No pronounced seasonal plumage shift occurs; the scaled pattern is present year-round, with sharpness varying by feather wear.

Habitat & Range

Common in open and semi-open habitats across much of Brazil and adjacent parts of South America, including savanna, dry scrub, agricultural land, and urban parks and gardens. It is a non-migratory resident that has adapted well to human-altered landscapes.

Behavior & Field Notes

Forages on open ground and bare soil for small seeds, often in small loose groups. Its call is a soft, repeated cooing note. Nests are simple stick platforms in low trees or shrubs. It is tolerant of human presence and frequently seen in gardens, roadside verges, and cultivated land alongside other small doves.
