Overview

The Grey-headed Dove is a shy, ground-foraging dove found in the understory of humid forests from Mexico through Central America into parts of Colombia. It is more often heard than seen, delivering a low, mournful cooing from dense cover. Its plain plumage and secretive habits make it one of the less conspicuous members of the Leptotila ground-dove group.

Identifying the Feather

The crown and face are pale bluish-grey, contrasting with an olive-brown back and wings and a clean white throat. A subtle coppery or purplish iridescence washes across the hindneck feathers, visible mainly in direct light. The breast is a soft vinous-grey fading to a pale, almost whitish belly. Wing feathers are unmarked and rounded, with no bold wing bars or spotting. A narrow red to reddish-orange orbital ring surrounds the eye, useful when examining head feathers or facial skin alongside plumage. Compare with the White-tipped Dove, which shows more distinct white tail-corner tips and a browner crown.

Plumage & Molt

Sexes are alike, with males and females both showing the grey crown, white throat, and iridescent nape. Juveniles are duller and browner overall, lacking the sharp grey-white head contrast until they mature. There is no distinct seasonal plumage change; the iridescent neck patch can appear dull or bright depending on feather wear and light angle rather than time of year.

Habitat & Range

Resident from eastern Mexico through Central America to northern Colombia, inhabiting the shaded floor and lower strata of humid evergreen and semi-deciduous forest, as well as older second growth. It is largely non-migratory, staying within a home range year-round.

Behavior & Field Notes

Forages alone or in pairs on the forest floor, picking up fallen seeds and small fruit while walking with a deliberate, bobbing gait. Its voice is a soft, low series of hooted notes, often the first clue to its presence in dense forest. Nests are simple stick platforms built low in shrubs or saplings. It tends to flush low and disappear quickly into cover when startled, making close observation uncommon.
