Overview
The Eurasian Hobby is a fast, aerial falcon breeding across Europe and Asia and migrating long distances to winter in sub-Saharan Africa. Its long, slender, pointed wings give it a silhouette closer to a large swift or swallow than a typical falcon, matching its extraordinary aerial agility.
Identifying the Feather
Wing feathers are long and slender, tapering to points that give a scythe-like shape in flight, quite different from the broader-based wings of larger falcons. Back and crown feathers are dark slate-gray, with a bold black malar stripe against a white cheek, and underparts are heavily streaked black on white. Adults show distinctive rufous feathers on the thighs and undertail coverts, sometimes called 'trousers,' a feature not yet developed in juveniles.
Plumage & Molt
Adults are dark slate above with heavily streaked underparts and rufous thighs and vent feathers, while juveniles are browner above with buffy, not yet rufous, thigh feathers. Molt is completed mainly on the African wintering grounds rather than the breeding grounds, unusual timing compared to many other raptors. There is no pronounced seasonal plumage change beyond typical wear.
Habitat & Range
This species breeds across open woodland edge, farmland, and wetland margins throughout Europe and Asia. It is a long-distance migrant, wintering in sub-Saharan Africa, and travels vast distances between breeding and wintering grounds each year.
Behavior & Field Notes
It hunts dragonflies, swifts, swallows, and other small birds in fast, agile aerial pursuit, often hunting actively at dusk over water where flying insects concentrate. Nests are typically old crow nests reused in tall trees, and the species gives high-pitched calls, particularly during breeding-season display flights.
