Overview

Overview

The Black-crested Titmouse is a close relative of the Tufted Titmouse, found in Texas and northeastern Mexico, and distinguished chiefly by its black rather than gray crest. Where their ranges meet, the two forms interbreed, but pure Black-crested individuals show a clean black crest feather that is not found in the Tufted Titmouse.

Its feathers otherwise share the soft, plain-gray character typical of titmice.

Identifying the Feather

Recognizing the Feathers

  • Crest feathers: solid black, pointed, contrasting with a pale forehead
  • Back & wing feathers: soft pale gray, unbarred
  • Flank feathers: faint rusty-buff wash
  • Underside feathers: whitish-gray

The black crest feather is the key identifying feature separating this species from the gray-crested Tufted Titmouse; body feathers otherwise look very similar between the two.

Plumage & Molt

Plumage

Sexes look alike, with a black crest, pale forehead, gray back, and whitish underparts with a light rusty flank wash. Hybrids with the Tufted Titmouse in the contact zone can show intermediate crest coloring. One molt occurs annually after breeding.

Habitat & Range

Habitat & Range

This species occupies oak woodlands, mesquite scrub, and riparian corridors across central and southern Texas into northeastern Mexico. It is a non-migratory permanent resident.

Behavior & Field Notes

Behavior & Field Notes

Behavior closely parallels the Tufted Titmouse: active foraging for insects and seeds, frequent feeder visits, cavity nesting, and a similar whistled song. Its range is more limited, so a black-crested feather found outside Texas or northeastern Mexico is unlikely to belong to this species.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Black-crested Titmouse feather different from a Tufted Titmouse's?

Its crest feather is black instead of gray; body feathers are otherwise similar.

Where would I find this species?

Texas and northeastern Mexico.

Do this species and the Tufted Titmouse interbreed?

Yes, where their ranges overlap, sometimes producing intermediate crest colors.

Are its flank feathers rust-colored like the Tufted Titmouse?

Yes, though often a bit paler.
