Wood Duck (Carolina Duck)

This exquisite feather comes from the flank of a breeding male Wood Duck, one of North America's most ornate waterfowl. Adult males exhibit an iridescent green-and-purple crest, bold white facial stripes, a rich chestnut breast, and distinctively patterned buff-and-black flank feathers like this specimen.

Striking dual-patterned feather featuring a rich chestnut-cinnamon patch along one side of the upper vane, bounded by a dark border and transitioning into a sharply defined white and black fine vermiculated (wave/flecked) pattern on the opposite edge, with a soft greyish-white downy base.

The distal portion has well-structured, pennaceous barbs forming the fine vermiculated (wavy patterned) and chestnut areas; the basal half features dense, loose, downy plumulaceous barbs for insulation.

Smooth and soft distal vane with a silky feel, shifting down into ultra-soft, fluffy plumulaceous down at the lower shaft.

Distinct contrast between a chestnut-cinnamon wash and brilliant, intricate black-and-white vermiculations on the same contour feather, underlaid by a downy basal tuft.

Wooded swamps, flooded forests, freshwater marshes, ponds, beaver ponds, and wooded river margins.

Breeds across North America from southern Canada throughout the eastern and central US, along the Pacific coast, and winters in the southern US and Mexico.
