Free online feather identification, explained
- Is the online feather identifier really free?
- Yes. You can identify feathers from this page with no account and no download. The free result is the most likely bird the feather came from and the feather type. The full report, with the species, family, feather anatomy, habitat, range, and field tips, is in the Feather Identifier app.
- How accurate is AI feather identification from a photo?
- It is a strong first guess, not a museum determination. Feathers from related species can look nearly identical, and a photo cannot show true size or the fine barb structure. Treat the result as a starting point and check important identifications against a field guide or with an ornithologist.
- What kind of photo works best?
- Lay the feather flat on a plain, contrasting background in natural daylight, fill most of the frame with it, and keep the vane and tip in sharp focus. If the two sides look different, photograph the upper (dorsal) surface, and add a coin or ruler for scale if you can.
- Can it identify flight, tail, and down feathers?
- Yes. Single feathers, several feathers together, molted feathers on the ground, feathers still on a bird, and cleaned, mounted, or craft feathers are all in scope. Photos with no feather in them, such as leaves, fur, or fabric, are flagged as not a feather.
- Am I allowed to keep the feather I found?
- That depends on where you live and which bird it came from. In the United States the Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it illegal to possess feathers of most native wild birds, and many other countries protect their birds in similar ways. Identifying a feather is always fine; check your local rules before taking one home.
