Identify a feather

Description

This is a massive feather from the fourth-largest eagle in the world. The White-tailed Eagle is a apex predator with broad, 'barn-door' wings, a wedge-shaped white tail (in adults), and a massive yellow beak. Its feathers are designed for durability in harsh marine environments.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly dark chocolate-brown to sepia throughout the pennaceous vane with no banding or mottling, fading into a pale, creamy-white downy base. The rachis is light tan to horn-colored.

Barb Structure

The upper portion is pennaceous with tightly interlocked barbs for wind/water resistance, while the lower third (base) is plumulaceous (semiplume down) for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Dense, heavy, and oily/waterproof. The pennaceous part is stiff and glossy, while the base is exceptionally soft and fibrous. It feels heavy due to the higher keratin density in large raptors.

Key Features

Immense size for a non-flight feather, uniform brown pigmentation without any barring, a very thick translucent rachis, and the heavy 'dense' feel noted by the collector.

Habitat

Coastal cliffs, large lakes, and brackish marshes. Found frequently on beaches and near estuaries where fish and waterfowl are abundant.

Geographic Range

Palearctic distribution from Greenland and Iceland across Europe (including Denmark/Køge) to Northern Asia and Japan.

Ecological Role

Apex predator and scavenger. They keep waterfowl populations healthy by culling the weak and are vital indicators of chemical health in coastal ecosystems.

Similar Species

Golden Eagle feathers (usually have a more tapered shape and different basal color), or large Grey Heron feathers (which are much thinner, lighter, and have a powder-down residue).

Interesting Facts

The White-tailed Eagle was nearly extinct in Western Europe by 1900 but has made a legendary comeback. They are known for their 'kleptoparasitism', often stealing fish from Ospreys or Otters.

Condition Notes

The feather shows significant wear and separation of the barbs ('zipper' effect), suggesting it is a molted feather that has been exposed to salt, wind, and sand on Køge beach for some time.

Notes

uniform brown all over besides fluffy white base. 18cm tall. 7cm wide. 3mm shaft. køge beach. dense and heavy for a feather. no markings anywhere and no colour change at tip of feather. known area for white tailed eagles and other water birds.
