Rufous-collared Sparrow

This feather comes from the Rufous-collared Sparrow, a small, distinctive songbird with a short conical bill, grey head with black stripes, and a signature rich rufous collar spanning its nape and sides of chest.

Displays a broad grayish-black outer margin at the tip, a bold rufous/chestnut horizontal band directly below it, and a slate-grey to brownish base.

The distal portion has tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs with a crisp dark tip and rufous subterminal band, transitioning to loose, fluffy plumulaceous down at the calamus base.

Very soft, light, and silky to the touch with a matte appearance.

Distinctive miniature tri-colored banding: dark charcoal rim, warm rufous subterminal zone, and pale greyish downy base.

Extremely adaptable: found in open humid forest edges, gardens, farmland, scrubland, and human settlements such as around Gamboa.

Resident throughout Neotropical regions from southeastern Mexico through Central America, down to Tierra del Fuego.

Primary seed-eater and opportunistic insectivore, aiding in weed seed control and serving as a food host for smaller tropical raptors.

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) nape feathers lack the clear rufous subterminal collar band; Chestnut-capped Brushfinch feathers are larger and denser.

The song of the Rufous-collared Sparrow shows pronounced geographical dialects across different valleys and elevations in Neotropical mountain ranges.

Good condition with minor naturally frayed plumulaceous barbs near the basal calamus; typical molted body feather.
