Rock Pigeon (Rock Dove, Feral Pigeon)

The Rock Pigeon is a robust, thick-necked bird with a small head and short legs. While typically slate gray with two black wingbars and an iridescent green and purple neck, color variations including pure white, pied, and reddish morphs are extremely common in urban feral populations.

Uniform pale white or light grey coloration, lack of heavy contrasting banding, typical of leucistic or white morph individuals or light underparts

Pennaceous at the distal end with interlocked barbs, becoming somewhat plumulaceous (fluffy) toward the proximal base

Acts as a primary urban scavenger, seed consumer, and an important prey base for urban raptors like the Peregrine Falcon

Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) or Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), though their contour feathers usually show distinct buff, brownish, or black spotting

Pigeons have exceptional navigational abilities using a magnetic sense and the sun, and they were used extensively as messenger pigeons during wartime to deliver critical dispatches
