Description
The Indian Peafowl is one of the most recognizable and breathtaking birds in the world. Adult males feature a striking metallic blue head and neck, a fan-like crest of wire-like feathers, and a massive train of up to 200 iridescent, ocellated upper tail coverts that are dramatically displayed during courtship. Females (peahens) are earth-toned with mottled brown and green plumage for camouflage while nesting. Their calls are loud, echoing trumpets, and their flight is surprisingly powerful despite their heavy plumage.

Stunning structural and pigment-based coloration featuring a prominent central 'eyespot' (ocellus). The eye consists of a deep metallic sapphire blue center surrounded by rings of brilliant bronze, emerald green, and rich coppery-brown. The lower shaft features long, thread-like green and bronze barbs.
Barb Structure
Modified and specialized pennaceous structure at the tip featuring interlocking barbs that form the iridescent eyespot, while the lower two-thirds of the feather lack interlocking barbicels (hooklets), giving the barbs a loose, hair-like, unzipped appearance.

Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus), which features greener, more lance-shaped ocellus patterns and a different neck coloration, and the Congo Peafowl (Afropavo congensis), which lacks the elaborate train altogether.
Interesting Facts
Peacocks shed their entire magnificent train every year after the breeding season (typically late summer) and regrow a new, even more elaborate one before the next mating season. The vibrant colors of the eyespot are not produced by pigments, but rather by microscopic crystal-like structures that reflect specific wavelengths of light through structural coloration.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The terminal eyespot is largely intact and vibrant with strong iridescence. Some minor natural wear and slight separation are visible on the lower loose barbs, typical of mature feathers found after molting.
