Description

The Eurasian Pygmy Owl is Europe's smallest owl, measuring just 16-19 cm with a compact build, short tail, and rounded head without prominent ear tufts. Its plumage is grayish-brown above, heavily spotted with white, and whitish below with brown streaks. Known for its energetic daytime hunting behavior, it preys on small birds and mammals.

Colour & Pattern

Rich chocolate brown background with striking, rounded white spots framed by darker brown borders along the margins.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper portion with finely interlocked barbs transitioning into a soft, plumulaceous base with a small afterfeather.

Texture & Surface

Soft, velvety texture with a matte finish, typical of owl feathers adapted for silent flight, though this contour feather lacks the specialized comb-like leading edge found on primary flight feathers.

Key Features

Very small size, rich brown coloration, and distinct rounded white spots placed symmetrically along the margins of a soft contour feather.

Habitat

Coniferous and mixed mountain forests, often near clearings, streams, and rocky areas at high elevations.

Geographic Range

Palearctic region, spanning across northern and central Europe, including the Alps, across Siberia to the Russian Far East.

Ecological Role

Acts as an important apex predator for micro-mammals and small passerine birds in alpine forest ecosystems, and relies heavily on old-growth forest cavities created by woodpeckers.

Similar Species

Tengmalm's Owl (Aegolius funereus), which is larger and features different white markings on its scapulars and contour feathers.

Interesting Facts

Despite being an owl, the Eurasian Pygmy Owl is frequently active during the day, especially in the morning and evening. It hoards food in tree cavities during autumn and winter for times when prey is scarce.

Condition Notes

Good condition with intact barbs and minimal wear, suggesting it was recently molted.
