Downy Woodpecker (also known as Little Sapsucker)

The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America, measuring only 6 to 7 inches in length. It features a black-and-white checkered wing pattern, a clean white back stripe, and a short, chisel-like bill. Males boast a small red patch on the back of the head. Their flight is characteristically undulating, and they are frequently seen hitching up tree trunks in search of insects.
