Description
This is a classic slate-gray contour feather from a Rock Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with heavy bodies and short legs, known for their iridescent neck feathers and varied plumage ranging from wild-type gray to white, red, and checkered patterns.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform cool slate-gray or 'pigeon blue' on the upper pennaceous portion; fades to a neutral light gray or whitish-gray in the downy base and rachis.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the distal end (top) for water shedding and protection; highly plumulaceous (downy) at the base (proximal end) for thermoregulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, matte, and soft. Pigeons produce a characteristic 'powder down' which often leaves a fine, dusty residue or matte bloom on the feather surface.
Key Features
Soft, rounded tip, distinct division between the dense gray top and the fluffy white downy base, and a matte 'powdery' texture common to the order Columbiformes.
Habitat
Highly adaptable: urban centers, agricultural fields, rocky cliffs, and suburban parks.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but introduced and naturalized on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also function as seed dispersers and urban scavengers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff colored), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray/beige, less downy base proportions).
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have a specialized 'bony' structure in their beak that helps them detect the Earth's magnetic field for navigation.
Condition Notes
Good condition; minor fraying at the tip suggests natural wear or 'preening' damage before the feather was molted.
