Description
A medium-sized, slender dove with a long, tapered tail. Adults are graceful with a pinkish-buff head and breast, and black spots on the wings. They are known for their mournful 'coo-ah' call and whistling wing beats during takeoff.
Colour & Pattern
Soft grayish-tan to buff base with a distinctive dark grey to charcoal-gray subterminal thumbprint or spot at the tip. Melanin-based coloration without iridescence.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the distal (outer) half with interlocked barbs; plumulaceous (downy) at the proximal base for insulation; smooth edges without specialized serrations.
Texture & Surface
Inner vane is silky and soft; the overall surface has a matte appearance with a slightly 'powdery' feel characteristic of Columbids.
Key Features
Soft buff-gray coloration with a specific charcoal-colored rounded spot at the tip; high proportion of downy base relative to the pennaceous tip.
Habitat
Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban gardens, grasslands, and light woods. Highly adaptable to human-altered landscapes.
Geographic Range
Year-round resident across most of North America and Mexico; northern populations migrate to the southern US and Central America for winter.
Ecological Role
Primary seed eater (granivore); serves as a major prey species for many raptors (Cooper's Hawks, Falcons) and domestic cats.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (lacks the distinct dark spotting on body contour feathers; generally paler) and White-winged Dove (feathers are usually darker or have white margins).
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves can drink water without tilting their heads back (suction drinking) and produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, a trait shared by very few bird families.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good; the feather shows slight separation of barbs (fraying) and appearing somewhat rumpled, possibly dislodged during preening or a minor struggle.
