Description

This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon, a medium-sized bird with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. Rock Pigeons in the wild typically have bluish-grey plumage with two black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers, though urban 'feral' individuals vary from white to pied to solid black.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly dark slate grey to charcoal black on the dorsal surface, indicating it likely came from a dark-phase or wild-type individual. The ventral side is slightly paler with a matte silvery sheen.

Barb Structure

Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked for aerodynamic efficiency, transitioning to a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the base (superior umbilicus) for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and firm texture with a slightly waxy, matte finish. The trailing edge is flexible while the leading edge is stiff to resist air pressure.

Key Features

Deep slate-grey coloration, strong vane asymmetry, and the specific yellowish-white tint of the calamus (quill base) are diagnostic for this species.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; found in urban city centers, rocky cliffs, agricultural areas, and open parks across Brazil.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; in Brazil, they are found in nearly every inhabited region, particularly concentrated in urban landscapes and farmland.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also prolific seed eaters and can act as nutrient recyclers in urban environments.

Similar Species

Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata) feathers are smaller and usually more brownish-grey; Picazuro Pigeon (Patagioenas picazuro) feathers are larger and often show different grey tonal shifts.

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and possess a remarkable homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and smell to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good condition; there is some separation (zipper-like gaps) in the trailing edge barbs and some wear at the tip, likely due to natural molting or impact.
