Domestic Pigeon (Rock Pigeon, Feral Pigeon)
Flight feather (Remex), likely a secondary or inner primary feather based on the curvature and relative symmetry.

Domestic Pigeon (Rock Pigeon, Feral Pigeon)

Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Columbiformes; Family: Columbidae; Genus: Columba; Species: Columba livia

Family: Columbidae (Doves and Pigeons)

Shape
Generally asymmetrical with a distinct curvature toward the body. The tip is rounded and blunt, which is characteristic of columbids to facilitate quick takeoffs. There is no significant emargination on the leading edge.
Size
Approximately 12-14 cm (about 5 inches) in length from calamus to tip, which is roughly half the length of an average adult human hand. This fits perfectly within the range for a standard Rock Pigeon.
Rarity
Very Common. Rock Pigeons are among the most abundant bird species in the world due to their proximity to human food sources.

Identify a feather

Description

This feather belongs to an almond, white, or dilute-colored Domestic Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with a chunky profile, small heads, and short legs. In the wild, they exhibit a gray body with two black wing bars, but domestic breeds can be entirely white, reddish, or mottled.

Colour & Pattern

Overall uniform pale cream to off-white coloration. This indicates the feather came from a domestic 'fancy' pigeon or a feral pigeon with leucistic or dilute genetics, as wild-type pigeons are typically slate grey.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs with well-developed barbules and hooklets (barbicels) that create a stiff, cohesive vane. This 'velcro-like' interlocking mechanism explains why the 'threads' do not break apart easily when pulled.

Texture & Surface

The surface is matte with a slightly powdery feel, characteristic of pigeons which produce 'powder down' to help with waterproofing. The vane is stiff and resilient to deformation.

Key Features

The combination of the rounded tip, the stiff interlocking barb structure, the powdery texture, and the specific curvature typical of Columbiformes.

Habitat

Found in a vast array of environments including urban city centers, farmyards, coastal cliffs, and suburban parks. They are highly adaptable to human-altered landscapes.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, they have been introduced to every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as scavengers, cleaning up discarded human food in cities.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (smaller, different color), Mourning Dove (narrower, more tapered tip), or a white Domestic Chicken (rachis usually thicker, barbs often more plumulaceous at the base).

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are famous for their 'homing' ability, using magnetoreception and olfactory cues to find their way home from hundreds of miles away. They are one of the few birds that can drink water by sucking it up rather than tilting their heads back.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The vane is mostly intact with some minor separation near the trailing edge (ruffling). The calamus is clean, suggesting it was naturally molted rather than plucked by a predator.

Notes

this feather isnt very big, i put my hand for comparison. its quite stiff and the threads on the feather dont break easily
