Description
This is a small, downy body feather from a white-morph Rock Pigeon. The bird itself typically features a gray body with iridescent neck feathers, but domestic and feral varieties often display pure white, pied, or rufous plumage. These birds are stout with short legs and a characteristic bobbing walk.
Colour & Pattern
Pure white (leucistic or domestic morph). The feather lacks any melanin banding or iridescence, appearing uniformly bright white under direct light.
Barb Structure
The lower two-thirds are plumulaceous (downy and fluffy) with loose barbs, while the tip shows a small pennaceous (interlocked) section; includes a prominent aftershaft.
Texture & Surface
Extremely soft, silky, and lightweight. The surface appears matte with a fine, airy texture typical of insulating body feathers.
Key Features
Pure white coloration, significant plumulaceous (downy) base, and a very thin, flexible white rachis.
Habitat
Urban centers, parks, farmland, and rocky cliffs. Highly adaptable to human-altered environments.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; found on every continent except Antarctica. Mostly non-migratory residents.
Ecological Role
Primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also act as scavengers and seed dispersers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers (usually tan/gray), Domestic Chicken (stiffer rachis), or Cattle Egret (longer with different barb density).
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact, though slightly splayed, suggesting it was naturally molted recently.
