Description

This feather belongs to the Rock Pigeon, a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This specific feather reflects the 'blue-gray' coat characteristic of the ancestral wild type. Rock Pigeons have a wingspan of 24-28 inches and are known for their strong, direct flight and 'cooing' vocalizations.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform cool slate-gray or blue-gray. The ventral side (shown) is slightly paler than the dorsal surface. There is no barring or spotting, which is typical of the plain gray morph of this species.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs throughout the majority of the vane, providing a firm surface for flight. The base (calamus area) shows a small amount of downy plumulaceous barbs for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat waxy to the touch with a matte finish. Pigeons produce a high amount of powder down, which can leave a dusty 'bloom' on the surface of flight feathers.

Key Features

Uniform slate-gray color, rounded tip, medium size, and the characteristic stiffness of a Columbid flight feather.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; naturally found on rocky cliffs, but now ubiquitous in urban areas, farmland, and city parks.

Geographic Range

Found worldwide across every continent except Antarctica. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they were introduced to the Americas in the 1600s.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. In many cities, they act as scavengers, cleaning up discarded human food, though they are primarily seed-eaters.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers are smaller and more tapered/pointed. Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are similar but often show a warmer, brownish-gray tint.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are famous for their homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and visual landmarks to find their way home from hundreds of miles away. They were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is slight fraying at the tip and some separation of the barbs near the base, suggesting it was molted naturally rather than lost to trauma.
