Pigeon or Rock Dove

The Rock Dove, commonly known as the feral pigeon, is a stout-bodied bird with a short neck and a small head. Originally native to cliffs and rocky shores of Europe, North Africa, and South Asia, they have successfully adapted to human-built environments globally. They exhibit a wide array of color morphs, though the wild type is characterized by grey plumage with two dark bars on the wings.

Uniform soft grey or slate-blue coloration with a darker tip, standard melanin-based gray typical of wild-type Rock Doves

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs transitioning into a plumulaceous (fluffy) downy base with loose barbs

Smooth and matte on the upper pennaceous vane, soft and downy at the basal section

Uniform slate-grey color, rounded tip, and distinct separation between the smooth upper pennaceous section and the fluffy downy base

Urban areas, agricultural fields, cliffs, bridges, and rocky coastal areas worldwide

Cosmopolitan distribution, found globally across urban and rural environments on all continents except Antarctica

Acts as an urban seed disperser and scavenger, though dense populations can compete with native bird species and impact urban architecture

Eurasian Collared-Dove and Mourning Dove, which generally have paler, brownish, or buff-toned feathers rather than the uniform slate-grey of the Rock Dove

Pigeons have exceptional navigational abilities, utilizing Earth's magnetic field, sun position, and landmarks to return home from thousands of miles away. They were historically used extensively as messenger pigeons in warfare.
