Wood Pigeon (also known as the Common Wood Pigeon)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Columbiformes, Family: Columbidae, Genus: Columba, Species: Columba palumbus
Family: Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
- Shape
- Asymmetrical vane with a slightly tapered, rounded tip. The leading edge (outer vane) is significantly narrower than the trailing edge (inner vane), which is typical for aerodynamic propulsion.
- Size
- Estimated at 15-18 cm in length. This is consistent with the primary range for an adult Wood Pigeon, which has a larger wing chord than most domestic pigeons.
- Rarity
- Very Common. In many parts of its range, it is one of the most abundant and easily observed large birds.

Description
The Wood Pigeon is a large, plump bird with a small head. It is distinguished from other pigeons by its white neck patch and white wing bars (visible in flight). The body is mostly gray, with a pinkish breast. Their flight is strong and direct, punctuated by a loud characteristic 'clap' of wings when they take off.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform slaty gray-blue on the upper surface with a subtle darker gray wash toward the tip. The outer edge of the narrow vane often shows a very thin, pale whitish margin. The underside is a lighter, more matte silver-gray.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs on the majority of the vane for flight rigidity; some plumulaceous (downy) barbs present at the base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and slightly waxy to the touch. The surface has a matte to semi-glossy appearance with the classic pigeon 'powder' coating that aids in water resistance.
Key Features
Uniform blue-gray coloration, large size compared to Rock Dove feathers, a thick pale rachis, and the absence of distinct dark barring.
Habitat
Found in a wide range of habitats including woodlands, farmlands, parks, and increasingly common in suburban and urban gardens.
Geographic Range
Widespread across Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. It is a resident in much of its range but northern and eastern populations migrate south for winter.
Ecological Role
Primary seed and grain consumer; they play a role in seed dispersal but can also be seen as agricultural pests. They are a major food source for large raptors like Goshawks and Peregrine Falcons.
Similar Species
Rock Dove (Feral Pigeon) feathers are smaller and often show darker banding; Stock Dove feathers look similar but are generally shorter and lack the white neck/wing markings associated with the bird.
Interesting Facts
Wood Pigeons produce 'pigeon milk' in their crops to feed their young, a highly nutritious substance that allows squabs to grow incredibly fast.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact with minimal fraying, suggesting a relatively recent molt or a healthy bird. Minor separation visible at the tip.
