Description
The Mourning Dove is one of the most familiar and abundant birds in North America. Recognized by its plump body, long pointed tail, and soft, grayish-brown plumage with black spots on the wings, it is renowned for its mournful, cooing calls. It has a swift, whistling flight and gathers frequently on the ground to forage for seeds.
Colour & Pattern
Pale greyish-brown with subtle soft tones, typical of the muted cryptic coloration used by doves for camouflage against terrestrial backgrounds.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the upper tip with tightly interlocked barbs, transitioning to slightly looser, semiplume-like or plumulaceous structure near the base with a small afterfeather.
Texture & Surface
Soft, silky, and relatively smooth with a matte finish, lacking high gloss or heavy waterproof oils.
Key Features
Subtle grey-brown coloration, slender pale rachis, soft silky texture, and small size characteristic of Columbiformes body feathers.
Habitat
Open country, semi-open habitats, farmlands, scrublands, urban areas, and suburban parks.
Geographic Range
Widespread throughout North America, extending from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into parts of Central America and the Caribbean.
Ecological Role
Acts as a primary seed disperser and a vital food source for numerous raptors and mammalian predators. Serves as a common indicator species for semi-open environments.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). Distinguished primarily by smaller size and specific shade of grey-brown coloration.
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves are capable of drinking water without lifting their heads, acting like a pump to suck up water. They are also prolific breeders, sometimes raising up to six broods a year in warm climates.
Condition Notes
Good condition with minor wear at the base and slightly ruffled barbs near the inferior umbilicus.
