Mourning Dove (also known as Carolina Pigeon or Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a long, tapering tail, pinkish-fawn to grey-brown upperparts, and dark spots on the wings. Known for its plaintive, melancholic cooing calls, strong direct flight with whistling wing beats, and habit of bobbing its head while walking on the ground.

Soft greyish-brown base with a distinct dark subterminal band near the squared tip, culminating in a pale whitish or buff terminal fringe.

Pennaceous at the upper distal tip with tightly interlocked barbs, transitioning into a looser, plumulaceous (fluffy) structure toward the base with downy barbs lacking strong hooklets.

Silky and soft with a matte appearance, typical of ground-foraging seed-eaters that rely on smooth plumage for aerodynamics and quiet movement.

Squared or truncated tip, delicate greyish-brown coloration with a subtle dark subterminal band, and a fluffy, plumulaceous base.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and grasslands, avoiding dense, unbroken forests.

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the entire United States and into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Partially migratory in the northern parts of its range.

Serves as a primary granivore controlling weed seeds, and acts as an important prey species for numerous raptors and mammalian carnivores.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), though their body contour feathers generally differ in coloration, scale, and exact tip morphology.

Mourning doves are among the most abundant and widely distributed birds in North America. They drink by sucking up water continuously without tilting their heads back, unlike most other birds.
