Description
This is a small body feather from a Rock Pigeon. Pigeons are medium-sized, stout birds with short necks and small heads. While wild types are gray with iridescent neck patches, urban 'feral' pigeons display wide color variations including pure white, as seen here.
Colour & Pattern
Pure white (leucistic or domestic breed influence). No banding or spots; consistent white coloration on both dorsal and ventral surfaces.
Barb Structure
Mixed: Pennaceous (tightly interlocked) at the tip for water shedding and Plumulaceous (loose and downy) at the base for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Silky, soft, and slightly matte. Notable 'powder down' residue may be present, common in the order Columbiformes.
Key Features
Pure white color, small rounded shape, significantly downy base, and characteristic short, sturdy rachis of a Columbid body feather.
Habitat
Urban centers, agricultural fields, rocky cliffs, and parks; highly adaptable to human-altered environments.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; found on every continent except Antarctica. Mostly sedentary/resident populations.
Ecological Role
Primary consumer of seeds and grains; serves as a major prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (usually buff/gray), Domestic Chicken (often stiffer rachis), or Mourning Dove (usually tan/gray).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are one of the few birds that produce 'crop milk' to feed their young and have been used for centuries as messengers due to their incredible homing ability.
Condition Notes
Good condition; likely a naturally molted feather. The barbs are slightly separated at the tip, and some dirt or wear is visible at the distal edges.
