Description
The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather exhibits the classic muted gray tones associated with the species. In life, these birds often show iridescent green and purple neck feathers and two dark wing bars, though this individual flight feather is monochromatic.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform slate-gray or 'blue-gray' coloration typical of the wild-type; slight darkening toward the tip; no distinct banding or spotting visible on this specific specimen.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous structure throughout most of the vane; plumulaceous (downy) barbs visible at the base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and stiff to the touch; the surface has a characteristic 'bloom' or powder-down coating giving it a matte appearance and slight water resistance.
Key Features
Charcoal-gray hue, stiff asymmetrical vane, rounded tip, and a relatively thick, light-colored rachis compared to its size.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; common in urban environments, farmlands, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary prey base for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; they serve as significant scavengers in human-altered landscapes.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are smaller and more tapered; Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) feathers are lighter gray with less asymmetry.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers due to their incredible homing abilities, even receiving medals of honor in WWI and WWII.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is significant 'zippering' or separation of the barbs along the leading edge, suggesting it was molted or exposed to wind/mechanical wear before being found.
