Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is one of the most abundant and familiar birds in North America, recognized by its plump body, long pointed tail, and melancholic cooing calls. Their plumage is generally muted in shades of soft grayish-brown and pinkish-fawn, with distinctive black spots on the wings and dark-bordered tail feathers.

Soft grayish-blue to pale brownish-gray coloration, typical of Columbidae body feathers, featuring a subtle gradient from a darker gray base to a lighter silvery-gray tip.

Mixed structure; pennaceous upper portion with loosely interlocked barbules transitioning into plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) lower portion near the base. No prominent afterfeather.

Soft, silky, and somewhat loose-textured. Lacks the stiffness of flight feathers; feels fluffy to the touch due to the prominent plumulaceous base.

Delicate grayish-blue coloration, soft and loose barb structure combining semiplume and contour traits, and small size (around 2 inches).

Open and semi-open country, agricultural fields, prairies, deserts, and suburban areas. Avoids dense forests and deep wetlands.

Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States and Mexico into Central America, as well as the Greater Antilles.

Important granivores that feed heavily on seeds, helping disperse plant matter. They serve as a primary prey species for numerous raptors and mammalian predators.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), though Mourning Dove body feathers are generally smaller and exhibit a more delicate pinkish-gray or soft blue-gray tone.

Mourning Doves are capable of drinking water without lifting their heads, acting like a pump to swallow continuously. They are also known for producing 'pigeon's milk', a nutritious secretion from the crop used to feed their altricial nestlings.

Good condition, clean with intact barbs and no major signs of breakage, sun bleaching, or parasitic damage.
