Description
This is a classic gray flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. These birds are stout with short legs and small heads. Their plumage varies wildly in urban settings due to feral breeding, but the 'wild type' features two black wing bars and a white rump. They are known for their strong, flapping flight and distinct 'cooing' vocalizations.
Colour & Pattern
Predominantly cool gray (slate) with a darker, diffuse charcoal-gray terminal band. The underside is a paler silvery-gray. No iridescent highlights are visible on this specific flight feather.
Barb Structure
The upper portion is pennaceous with tightly interlocked barbs for flight efficiency, while the base (calamus area) shows plumulaceous, loose downy barbs for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and slightly matte on the dorsal surface, with a characteristic silky feel common to the Columbidae family. The leading edge is stiff and resistant to airflow.
Key Features
The combination of the solid slate-gray color, the pale rachis, the rounded tip, and the 'pigeon-soft' texture is diagnostic. The slight curvature indicates its position on the wing.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; naturally found on rocky cliffs but now ubiquitous in urban areas, agricultural fields, and parks.
Geographic Range
Found globally on every continent except Antarctica. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced worldwide.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. In cities, they act as scavengers, while in the wild, they are primarily seed dispersers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller and more tan/buff; Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are similar but usually a warmer, sandy gray without the dark terminal shading.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated. They have an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and scent to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.
Condition Notes
Good condition. There is slight separation of the barbs near the base (barbule unzipping), likely from a natural molt or impact. No significant sun-bleaching or parasite damage is visible.
