Description
This feather belongs to the Canada Goose, a large waterbird known for its black 'chinstrap' and long black neck. The feather shows the typical waterproofing and insulation of the species. The bird itself is heavy-bodied with a wingspan of up to 5.5 feet and is famous for its 'honking' calls and V-formation flight.
Colour & Pattern
Bicolor pattern: a dark grayish-brown to charcoal terminal end fading into a pale gray mid-section and a pure white downy base. The rachis is dark in the pigmented section and pales toward the calamus.
Barb Structure
The upper half is pennaceous and tightly interlocked for wind and water resistance; the lower half (base) is plumulaceous (semiplume/downy) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat stiff at the tip; extremely soft, fluffy, and insulating at the base. The upper surface has a slight matte-to-satin finish typical of waterfowl.
Key Features
The distinctive dark-brown-to-white gradient, the large downy base, and the overall size/texture typical of the Anatidae family.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; found in lakes, ponds, bays, marshes, grain fields, and frequently urban areas like parks and golf courses near water.
Geographic Range
Native to North America, breeding across Canada and the Northern US; widespread throughout the continent year-round, with migratory populations reaching Mexico.
Ecological Role
Primary grazer and seed disperser; they play a significant role in nutrient cycling in wetlands but can also overgraze sensitive areas in high densities.
Similar Species
Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii) is nearly identical but smaller; Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) body feathers are generally smaller and more curved.
Interesting Facts
Canada Geese are known for their strong pair bonds, often mating for life. They are highly protective of their young and will hiss or charge at perceived threats.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. Shows some separation of the barbs ('zipped' open) near the leading edge and slight wear at the tip, typical of a molted specimen.
