Description
The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. While 'wild' types are bluish-grey with two black wing bars and an iridescent neck, feral populations show immense variation including white, rufous, and pied patterns. In flight, they are fast and direct with characteristic clapping wings upon takeoff.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform charcoal grey to dark slaty-blue on the distal half, fading into a lighter pearlescent grey towards the base. The underside is generally paler and more matte. No distinct banding or spots are visible, typical of the 'blue-bar' or 'checker' morphs.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked and pennaceous throughout most of the vane to provide air resistance for flight; plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs are present at the base near the calamus for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and slightly glossy on the upper surface due to specialized preen oils that provide water resistance. The trailing edge is softer than the leading edge.
Key Features
The combination of the medium size, uniform slate-grey coloration fading to a pale base, and the classic rounded Columbid flight feather shape are diagnostic.
Habitat
Extremely versatile; found in urban city centers, farmyards, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas. They prefer man-made structures for nesting and roosting which mimic their ancestral cliff habitats.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced to and resident in almost every major city and continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary role as a prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also serve as seed dispersers and urban scavengers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered/pointed, brownish-tan), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey with different proportions), and Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, typically with a distinct terminal band).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, a secretion from the lining of the crop that is high in protein and fat, similar in function to mammalian milk. They are also famous for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to navigate.
Condition Notes
Good condition; the vane is largely intact with minor fraying at the tip and trailing edge, suggesting it was molted recently or during a period of low stress.
