Description

This is a classic slate-gray contour feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. While most wild-type birds are gray with two black wing bars and a white rump, urban populations show huge color variation from white to deep charcoal (melanistic).

Colour & Pattern

Uniform charcoal gray to slaty blue-gray. Typical of the 'blue-bar' or 'check' morphs. The color comes from eumelanin. No iridescence is visible on this specific body contour feather.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous at the distal end (interlocked and smooth) transitioning to plumulaceous (fluffy/downy) near the base (calamus). Intact and supple.

Texture & Surface

Velvety and smooth to the touch. The distal portion has a matte finish with a slight powdery bloom, typical of pigeons which produce 'feather dust'.

Key Features

Soft blue-gray coloration, distinct downy base for insulation, and a rounded, symmetrical shape characteristic of columbid body feathers.

Habitat

Extremely diverse, ranging from rocky sea cliffs to urban city centers, farms, and suburban parks. They are highly adaptable to human-altered landscapes.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Primary prey base for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They are also important scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, more uniform gray but with a distinct white neck crescent not seen on feathers).

Interesting Facts

Pigeons produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, and they are one of the few birds that can drink water by sucking it up through their beaks like a straw rather than tipping their heads back.

Condition Notes

Good condition; the vane is mostly intact without significant wear or 'fault bars' (stress lines), suggesting a healthy individual.
