Common Raven (also known as the Northern Raven)

This is a large, robust flight feather from a Common Raven, the largest passerine bird. Ravens are massive all-black birds with heavy bills and shaggy throat feathers. They are legendary for their soaring flight and wedge-shaped tails.

Uniformly deep matte black to brownish-black. Under direct sunlight, it may exhibit a faint blue or violet structural iridescence. The ventral (underside) is slightly duller and more greyish-black.

Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane for flight rigidity; base shows a small plumulaceous (downy) section for insulation.

Smooth and stiff to the touch. The surface has a slight waxy gloss typical of corvids, though this specimen shows a matte finish common in weathered or older molted feathers.

Large size (over 10 inches), deep black coloration, extreme vane asymmetry, and a stout, dark central rachis.

Extremely versatile: found in coniferous forests, coastal cliffs, alpine tundras, deserts, and increasingly in rural and suburban areas.

Widespread throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Resident across North America from the Arctic to Mexico, and across Eurasia and North Africa.

Apex scavenger and opportunistic predator. They play a vital role in cleaning ecosystems of carrion and dispersing seeds.

American Crow (smaller, less asymmetrical), Turkey Vulture (larger, two-toned grey/black), and Chihuahuan Raven (nearly identical, requires geographical context).

Ravens are among the most intelligent of all animals, capable of tool use, complex problem solving, and mimicking human speech and other environmental sounds.

Good condition. The tip shows slight wear and the base shows minor separation of barbs, suggesting it was naturally molted. The calamus (quill) is clear and intact.
