Description

This is a classic white plume from a Cattle Egret. The bird itself is a small, compact heron with a thick neck and a relatively short, yellow bill. While snowy white for most of the year, adults develop beautiful buff-orange plumes on the head, chest, and back during the breeding season. They are famous for their symbiotic relationship with cattle, eating the insects stirred up by the animals' hooves.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly stark white. There is no evidence of melanin-based patterns, banding, or spots. The underside is slightly more matte than the upper surface.

Barb Structure

Largely pennaceous throughout the main vane, becoming slightly plumulaceous (downy) at the very base of the calamus. The barbs are tightly knit but thin.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat silky to the touch. The feather has a light, airy quality characteristic of marsh birds, with a slightly glossy finish on the dorsal side.

Key Features

Pure white coloration, distinctive elongated lanceolate shape, and a thin, flexible white rachis.

Habitat

Widely found in grasslands, pastures, and agricultural fields, often following livestock. Unlike many other egrets, they are less dependent on water and are frequently seen in dry upland areas.

Geographic Range

Found globally in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate zones. They are year-round residents in the southern US and South America, with northern populations migrating south for winter.

Ecological Role

Acts as an insectivore that provides pest control for livestock. They are important members of the terrestrial food web and serve as indicators of agricultural health.

Similar Species

Snowy Egret feathers are similar but usually more recurved or 'wispy.' Great Egret feathers are much larger. White morph Little Blue Herons have similar feathers but they are rarely this narrow.

Interesting Facts

The Cattle Egret is one of the greatest avian explorers in history; it originally lived in Africa and parts of Asia but naturally crossed the Atlantic to South America in the late 1800s and has since colonized nearly every continent.

Condition Notes

The feather appears to be in Good to Excellent condition. The vane is mostly intact with minimal fraying at the tip, suggesting it was recently molted or dropped.
