Description
This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is stout-bodied with a small head, short legs, and a variable plumage ranging from 'blue-bar' (gray with black wing bars) to checkered, red, or white. They are known for their circular 'cooing' vocalizations and fast, direct flight with noisy wingbeats.
Colour & Pattern
Charcoal gray to slate gray with a distinct, broad dark subterminal band near the tip. The very tip shows a lighter gray or whitish edge, common in domestic or feral variants.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous and tightly interlocked throughout the majority of the vane; plumulaceous (downy) at the very base (calamus area) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and slightly waxy to the touch. The surface has a matte appearance with a faint sheen typical of Pigeon tail feathers.
Key Features
Wide, dark subterminal band; blunt, rounded tip; neutral gray base color; sturdy, straight rachis.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; common in urban environments, farmlands, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and established worldwide.
Ecological Role
Primary urban scavenger and important prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered/pointed); Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, distinct white crescent); Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter sandy-gray).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are credited with being the first domesticated bird and were used extensively as message carriers in WWI and WWII due to their incredible homing abilities.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact though slightly separated at the edges, suggesting a naturally molted feather rather than one lost to predation.
