Identify a feather

Description

This feather belongs to the Rock Pigeon, a stout-bodied bird with a small head and short legs. While 'wild' types are grey with black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers, domestic and feral pigeons like this one come in 'pied' or all-white varieties. They are known for their bobbing head gait and low cooing vocalizations.

Colour & Pattern

Pure white (leucistic or domestic-type coloration). There are no distinctive markings, banding, or iridescence visible on this specific specimen. The rachis is also translucent-white.

Barb Structure

Mixed structure; the distal (top) half is pennaceous with interlocked barbs creating a flat surface, while the proximal (bottom) half is plumulaceous (downy) and loose for insulation.

Texture & Surface

The surface is soft and silky. Pigeons produce a 'powder down' which often leaves a matte, dusty bloom on the feathers, helping with waterproofing and maintenance.

Key Features

Rounded tip, symmetrical shape, significant downy base, and pure white coloration. The lack of any color gradient at the tip distinguishes it from similar white-based feathers of other birds.

Habitat

Found in a wide range of habitats, primarily urban and suburban environments, farmland, and rocky seaside cliffs in their original wild range.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; a year-round resident in almost every major city and rural area across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They are also significant seed eaters and scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers are similar in shape but usually tan/grey; Cattle Egret or White Ibis feathers are longer and have stiffer shafts; domestic chicken feathers can appear similar but often have a different quill thickness.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years. They possess an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and visual landmarks to navigate.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. The feather shows some 'bedraggled' textures at the tips and the base appears attached to some debris or skin fragments, suggesting it may have been pulled out rather than naturally molted.
