Description
This is a grey contour feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short neck, and small head. They exhibit massive color variation but the 'wild type' is blue-grey with two black wing bars and a white rump.
Colour & Pattern
Slate grey base color transitioning to a darker, nearly black terminal band. Subtle iridescent sheen visible near the edges typical of the grey-patterned morph.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs at the tip and middle, transitioning to plumulaceous (downy) structure at the base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, slightly oily/water-resistant texture with a semi-glossy finish. Typical 'bloom' or powder appearance common in pigeons.
Key Features
Distinct dark terminal band, pale calamus, rounded tip, and dense barb structure characteristic of Columbidae.
Habitat
Ubiquitous in urban environments, farms, and rocky cliffs. Highly adaptable to human-altered landscapes.
Geographic Range
Worldwide distribution. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia; now found on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primarily a seed and grain consumer. Serves as a major prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed, tan/brown), Eurasian Collared-Dove (grayer, lacks the dark terminal band seen here).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are capable of navigating home from over 1,000 miles away using magnetic fields and infrasound. They are one of the few birds that can drink by sucking up water without tilting their heads back.
Condition Notes
Good condition. Minimal wear at the tip, though a small separation in the vane is visible (distorted barbs). No signs of parasites.
