Description
A large, heavy-bodied bird with iridescent bronze-green plumage, a naked head with red/blue wattles, and a fan-shaped tail. This specific feather shows the cryptic barring used for camouflage among leaf litter.
Colour & Pattern
Distinctive horizontal barring of dark chocolate brown or black against a light cream or buff background on the pennaceous tip. The downy base is a uniform smoky gray to brownish-gray.
Barb Structure
Mixed structure: the distal (top) half is pennaceous and interlocked, while the proximal (bottom) half is highly plumulaceous (fluffy down) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
The top portion is smooth and slightly stiff, while the base is extremely soft, silky, and voluminous. The surface has a matte appearance typical of ground-dwelling birds.
Key Features
Sharp, clean horizontal 'turkey barring' on the tip combined with an exceptionally large, fluffy gray downy base.
Habitat
Mature forests with mast-producing trees (like oak and hickory), interspersed with open clearings, grasslands, and suburban edges.
Geographic Range
Year-round resident throughout most of North America, from southern Canada through the United States to central Mexico.
Ecological Role
Omnivorous foragers that act as seed dispersers and are a major prey source for large predators. They serve as an indicator species for forest health.
Similar Species
Ruffed Grouse feathers are similar but smaller with more complex, mottled patterns rather than clean bars. Barred Owl feathers have a much softer, velvety 'muff' texture.
Interesting Facts
Wild Turkeys were famously proposed by Benjamin Franklin as a more 'respectable' national bird than the Bald Eagle. They can fly at speeds up to 55 mph over short distances.
Condition Notes
Good condition; the barbs are mostly intact, though there is slight separation in the pennaceous vane suggesting it is a naturally molted feather.
