Description

This is a classic 'Eastern' morph adult Red-tailed Hawk primary. The bird is a large, bulky raptor with a broad wingspan of nearly 4 feet, famous for its brick-red tail and piercing 'kee-ee-ar' scream. This feather showcases the powerful wing structure that allows for soaring on thermals.

Colour & Pattern

Base color is off-white to creamy white on the inner vane; outer vane and distal half feature dark brown earthy tones with distinct transverse banding (bars). The dorsal side is more richly pigmented than the ventral side.

Barb Structure

Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs on the distal portion for water resistance and flight rigidity; plumulaceous (downy) at the proximal base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and firm texture with a slightly matte finish; the leading edge is exceptionally stiff to prevent twisting during the downstroke.

Key Features

Bold dark brown transverse banding on a pale background, significant vane asymmetry, and the characteristic notched leading edge (emargination).

Habitat

Highly adaptable; found in open woodlands, prairies, agricultural fields, urban parks, and scrublands with high perches for hunting.

Geographic Range

Ubiquitous across North America, from central Alaska and Canada south through Mexico and Central America; northern populations are migratory while southern ones are year-round residents.

Ecological Role

Apex predator; plays a vital role in controlling rodent and lagomorph populations. It serves as an indicator species for environmental health in agricultural ecosystems.

Similar Species

Red-shouldered Hawk (smaller, more frequent/sharper banding); Cooper's Hawk (shorter, rounded wing feathers); Ferruginous Hawk (lighter overall with less distinct banding).

Interesting Facts

The Red-tailed Hawk's raspy scream is almost always used in Hollywood movies to represent any eagle or hawk, regardless of the species actually shown on screen.

Condition Notes

Good condition; minimal wear on the trailing edge suggests a relatively recent molt. No significant fault bars or parasitic damage visible.
