Description

These feathers belong to a medium-sized, slender dove known for its mournful 'coo-oo' call. The bird has a delicate grayish-brown body with black spots on the wings and a long, pointed tail. In flight, the white edges of the tail are highly visible, a feature centered on these specific feathers.

Colour & Pattern

Gradated slate-gray or brownish-gray at the base, transitioning into a bold, dark charcoal or black subterminal band, finished with a distinct white or pale gray distal tip.

Barb Structure

Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked towards the distal end and tip, becoming plumulaceous (fluffy) and loose at the proximal base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, matte, and soft to the touch. The feather has the characteristic 'velvety' feel common to Columbiformes, designed for quiet takeoffs.

Key Features

Tri-colored pattern: gray base, black subterminal band, and white/pale tip. Soft, velvety matte texture typical of doves.

Habitat

Found in a wide variety of open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, grasslands, suburban backyards, parks, and light woodlands.

Geographic Range

Year-round resident across most of North America, from southern Canada through the United States to Mexico and Central America.

Ecological Role

Primarily a seed consumer (granivore), playing a role in seed dispersal. They are a significant prey species for hawks, falcons, and owls.

Similar Species

White-winged Dove (has much larger white patches), Eurasian Collared-Dove (tail is squarer and lacks the distinct dark subterminal band/white tip contrast).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves can fly at speeds up to 55 mph. They are prolific breeders, sometimes raising up to six broods in a single year in warm climates.

Condition Notes

Good to Excellent. The vanes are mostly intact with minor ruffling near the edges, suggesting they were recently molted or dropped.
