Description
This is a typical body feather from a Rock Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with short legs, a small head, and a heavy, plump body. Their plumage is incredibly diverse due to domestication, ranging from slate grey with iridescent neck patches to white, reddish-brown, or mottled patterns.
Colour & Pattern
Solid medium-grey to slate-grey base color. There is no distinct banding or mottling, which is characteristic of the 'blue-bar' or 'check' morph of the species. The downy base is a lighter, paler greyish-white.
Barb Structure
Dual-structured; the distal (top) half is pennaceous and interlocked for wind/water resistance, while the bottom half is highly plumulaceous (downy) for insulation. Barbs are relatively coarse and dense.
Texture & Surface
The surface is soft and matte. Pigeons produce 'powder down' which often leaves a slightly dusty or chalky feel to the feathers, contributing to their water-repellent properties.

Interesting Facts
Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers due to their incredible homing ability, even receiving medals for service during WWI and WWII.
