Identify a feather

Description

This is a secondary wing feather from a Rock Pigeon, a medium-sized, stout bird with a small head and short legs. This species is famous for its varied plumage colors ranging from blue-gray to white, though flight feathers typically remain consistent shades of gray.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly pale gray to slate gray on the dorsal surface, slightly lighter on the ventral side. No distinct banding or spots, which is typical for the gray-morph flight feathers.

Barb Structure

Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane, with a small plumulaceous section near the base of the calamus for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, slightly stiff, and matte surface. The feather has a characteristic silky feel common to Columbiformes due to specialized powder down.

Key Features

Pale gray uniform coloration, rounded tip, relatively stiff rachis, and the presence of a 'powder' texture common to pigeons.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; thrives in urban environments (cities, parks, bridges), agricultural land, and coastal cliffs (original natural habitat).

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; resident year-round on every continent except Antarctica. Non-migratory in most urban settings.

Ecological Role

Serves as a primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also prolific seed eaters and scavengers.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are smaller and more tapered; Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are similar but often lighter with different undertail patterns.

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (by the Sumerians). They possess an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field to navigate.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. The vane shows some minor fraying at the edges and separation of the barbs near the base (calamus). No obvious parasite damage.
