Description
This slate-gray feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short legs, and a small head. While feral populations show diverse plumage (pied, rufous, black), the 'wild type' features a blue-grey body with iridescent green and purple neck patches and two black wing bars. They are known for their 'cooing' vocalizations and strong, direct flight with rapid wing beats.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform slate-gray to blue-gray coloration on the pennaceous vane. The rachis transitions from a dark gray/black in the vane to a translucent white at the calamus. The ventral side is typically paler and more matte.
Barb Structure
The upper portion is tightly interlocked and pennaceous for aerodynamic integrity, while the base contains a soft, fluffy plumulaceous (downy) section for insulation.
Texture & Surface
The surface is smooth and somewhat matte with a powdery feel. Pigeons produce 'powder down' which coats feathers in a fine dust, providing a degree of water resistance and a silky texture.
Key Features
Uniform slate-gray color without banding; rounded tip; thick, pale calamus; presence of pigeon powder; medium size typical of Columbids.
Habitat
Extremely versatile; found in urban city centers, rocky cliffs, coastal areas, and agricultural farmland where grain is available.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced worldwide and are permanent residents on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller, more pointed, and tan/brown; Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers provide a similar gray but are usually lighter with different quill proportions.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers due to their incredible homing ability, which utilizes sensing of the Earth's magnetic fields.
Condition Notes
Good condition. There is slight separation of the barbs near the mid-section (split vane), likely due to mechanical wear or handling, but the tip and downy base remain largely intact.
