Description

A slender, medium-sized dove with long, tapered tails. The bird is generally buffy-tan and gray with black spots on the wings. This feather exhibits the subtle, soft gray-to-black gradient seen on the bird's upperparts, which provides excellent camouflage against shadows and bark.

Colour & Pattern

Three-toned gradient: pale grayish-white plumulaceous base, transitioning to a medium neutral gray, and ending in a distinct dark charcoal/sooty black distal tip; the ventral side is lighter than the dorsal side

Barb Structure

Pennaceous at the distal (top) half with tightly interlocked barbs; plumulaceous (downy) at the proximal base for insulation; barbs appear intact and healthy

Texture & Surface

Inner base is soft and downy; outer vane is smooth, silky, and matte; the surface has a slightly powdery feel characteristic of Columbids

Key Features

Soft grey color, distinct dark charcoal rounded tip, and a large fluffy white downy base

Habitat

Extremely versatile: found in open woodlands, prairies, agricultural fields, suburban gardens, and urban parks

Geographic Range

Resident year-round across the contiguous United States and Mexico; northern populations migrate south from Canada and the northern US for winter

Ecological Role

Primary seed eater (granivore); serves as an important prey species for raptors like Cooper's Hawks and Falcons

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (lacks the dark tip and is generally paler/sandier) and Rock Pigeon (typically coarser texture and different color patterns)

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are known for the whistling sound their wings make during takeoff and their mournful 'coo-oo' song; they are one of the most hunted game birds but maintain high populations due to prolific breeding

Condition Notes

Good condition; no signs of parasite damage (lice) or stress bars; likely a naturally molted feather given the intact calamus
