Description
A graceful, slender-tailed dove with a small head and soft gray-brown coloration. This feather reflects the bird's characteristic 'muted' palette. Known for their mournful cooing and whistling wing beats.
Colour & Pattern
Bicolor pattern; base is pure white transitioning into a warm, sandy-brown or tan distal end. No barring or spotting is present, which is characteristic of basic dove plumage.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the distal (outer) half with interlocking barbicels for smoothness; plumulaceous (downy) at the proximal base for insulation; barbs appear intact but slightly separated at the tip.
Texture & Surface
Extremely soft and silky to the touch. The surface is matte with a slightly powdery 'bloom' typical of Columbids, which helps with water resistance and hygiene.
Key Features
Soft tan color, white downy base, silky texture, and the absence of any dark banding or iridescent streaks which separates it from other similar-sized birds.
Habitat
Open and semi-open habitats including grasslands, farms, orchards, suburban backyards, and light woods. Avoids deep, unbroken forests.
Geographic Range
Found throughout North America from southern Canada to Central America. Northern populations are migratory, while southern ones are year-round residents.
Ecological Role
Primary seed eaters (granivores), playing a role in seed dispersal. They are a significant prey species for hawks, falcons, and owls.
Similar Species
White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) feathers usually show more gray; Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) feathers are typically a cooler, more uniform gray-white.
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves can drink water without tilting their heads back, a rare trait among birds. They also produce 'crop milk' to feed their young.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. Shows some separation of the barbs at the tip (vane splitting) and slight wear, likely a naturally molted feather.
