Common Raven (Northern Raven)
Primary flight feather (remex), likely an inner primary (P1-P4)

Common Raven (Northern Raven)

Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Passeriformes, Family: Corvidae, Genus: Corvus, Species: Corvus corax

Family: Corvidae (Crows, Jays, and Ravens)

Shape
Asymmetrical vane with a broad trailing edge and narrower leading edge; rounded to slightly tapered tip; noticeable emargination (notching) on the inner web.
Size
Estimated 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in length. This is consistent with the mid-range for Corvus corax primaries, which are significantly larger and more robust than those of the American Crow.
Rarity
Common in appropriate habitats. While widespread, they are less densely populated than crows but easily observed due to their size and vocalizations.

Identify a feather

Description

The feather is a robust, ink-black flight feather from the world's largest passerine. The Common Raven is a massive, all-black bird with a thick bill, shaggy throat feathers (hackles), and a distinctive wedge-shaped tail in flight.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly deep matte black with a subtle blue or violet iridescent sheen visible under direct light. The underside is more of a dull charcoal gray. No banding or spots are present, indicating a mature or near-mature plumage.

Barb Structure

Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs providing a rigid, aerodynamic surface. The base shows a small amount of plumulaceous (downy) structure near the calamus for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, stiff, and somewhat glossy on the dorsal surface. The trailing edge is slightly softer, while the leading edge is very rigid to withstand wind resistance.

Key Features

Large size, deep black pigmentation without patterns, strong asymmetry, and a characteristic notch on the inner web typical of large corvids.

Habitat

Extremely versatile, found in forests, mountains, sagebrush, coastal cliffs, and increasingly in urban outskirts. They prefer open landscapes for foraging near vertical structures for nesting.

Geographic Range

Widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere across North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. In North America, they are permanent residents from the Arctic to Central America.

Ecological Role

Apex scavenger and occasional predator. They play a vital role in cleaning up carrion and are indicators of healthy, diverse ecosystems. Populations are currently stable or increasing.

Similar Species

American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) feathers are smaller and have a more rounded tip; Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) feathers are larger and usually have a more silvery-gray underside.

Interesting Facts

Ravens are among the most intelligent of all animals; they can solve complex puzzles, use tools, and have been known to mimic human speech and other environmental sounds.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is some minor splitting (separation of barbs) on the trailing edge, likely due to natural wear or contact with brush before molting.
