Description
This is a flight feather from a Rock Pigeon, a bird known for its stout body, short neck, and small head. While wild ancestors have two black wing bars, domestic and feral pigeons come in various 'morphs' including all-white, red, and checker patterns. They are famous for their cooing vocalizations and bobbing head movement while walking.
Colour & Pattern
Predominantly pale grey to medium charcoal. The feather shows a subtle gradient with a darker outer web and a slightly lighter inner vane. No distinct banding is visible, suggesting a solid-colored individual (Blue-bar or Checker morph).
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane for flight integrity, transitioning to a small plumulaceous (fluffy) section at the base (superior umbilicus).
Texture & Surface
Smooth and stiff with a slightly matte finish. The surface feels somewhat waxy or oily, a trait common in many water-resistant bird feathers.
Key Features
Tapered asymmetrical flight shape, solid grey coloration, and a rigid, light-colored central rachis.
Habitat
Extremely diverse, ranging from urban city centers and bridges to rural farmland and rocky coastal cliffs.
Geographic Range
Found globally on every continent except Antarctica. They are primarily year-round residents and do not undergo long-distance migrations.
Ecological Role
Primary role as a prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also act as seed dispersers in rural environments.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed feather), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter sandy-grey color), or various Hawk species (which would typically have banding/mottling).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons have an incredible homing ability, using the earth's magnetic fields and visual landmarks to find their way back to a nest from hundreds of miles away.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. The feather shows some minor 'zippering' or separation of the barbs along the edges, likely from being molted and handled or from wind wear.
