Description

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful long tail, small head, and soft grayish-brown plumage tinged with pinkish-fawn on the breast. Known for its distinctive mournful cooing calls and rapid, whistling flight, it is one of the most familiar and widespread game birds in North America

Colour & Pattern

Uniform soft grey-blue coloration on the upper pennaceous surface, with lighter whitish-grey tones at the fluffy base, characteristic of the soft plumage of doves

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a loose, plumulaceous (fluffy) base with downy barbs

Texture & Surface

Smooth and silky on the upper portion, soft and fluffy at the base, with a matte, non-glossy appearance characteristic of dove body plumage

Key Features

Soft grey-blue coloration, distinct separation between the smooth upper pennaceous vane and the fluffy downy base, and small size typical of columbid body feathers

Habitat

Open and semi-open country, agricultural fields, prairies, urban areas, suburban gardens, and light woodlands, avoiding dense forests

Geographic Range

Widespread throughout North America, including southern Canada, the entire United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America, with northern populations migrating southward

Ecological Role

Primary granivore feeding heavily on seeds, serving as a vital food source for raptors and mammalian predators, and acting as an important seed disperser

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), whose body feathers can be very similar in texture and grey coloration

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves drink by suction rather than sipping and tilting their heads back like most birds, allowing them to drink continuously without interruption

Condition Notes

Good condition, intact barbs, clean surface with no obvious signs of breakage, severe wear, or parasite damage
