Mourning Dove (also known as the Carolina Dove or Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a long, tapering tail, small head, and soft grayish-brown plumage tinged with pinkish fawn below. Known for its distinctive mournful cooing calls and swift, whistling flight.

Soft pale grey-blue base with distinct brownish-grey subterminal spotting or banding near the rounded tip. The rachis is white near the base and darkens slightly toward the center.

Semi-pennaceous to plumulaceous structure with interlocked barbs near the tip transitioning to loose, fluffy barbs toward the base. Intact but showing some wear along the edges.

Soft, silky, and somewhat loose in texture with a matte appearance. Lacks the rigid stiffness of primary or secondary flight feathers.

Delicate grey-blue coloration, soft texture, rounded tip, and subtle brownish subterminal spots characteristic of dove body plumage.

Open country, urban areas, farms, prairies, and light woods. Highly adaptable to human-modified landscapes.

Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America and the Caribbean.

Serves as an important prey species for various raptors and mammals. Acts as a significant seed disperser and forager in agricultural and natural ecosystems.

Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) and Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), though both are generally larger and lack the specific delicate grey-brown tones and spots of the Mourning Dove.

Mourning Doves are one of the most widely distributed and abundant birds in North America. They drink by sucking up water continuously without lifting their heads, unlike most other birds.

Fair to good condition with some fraying and separation of barbules along the lower edges, typical of a naturally molted feather found on the ground.
