Mourning Dove (also known as Carolina Pigeon, Carolina Turtledove)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful tail and a soft grayish-brown plumage glossed with iridescent pinkish-bronze tones on the neck. Known for its haunting, mournful cooing calls and rapid, whistling flight.

Soft grayish-brown or taupe base color with a subtle pale fringe along the rounded tip and a slightly lighter greyish tone at the concealed base.

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning to a slightly more plumulaceous base with a small, inconspicuous afterfeather.

Smooth, silky, and relatively soft with a matte finish, typical of a protective and insulating body contour feather.

Uniform grayish-taupe coloration with a smooth, rounded tip and slender white rachis, lacking bold banding or stark contrast.

Open country, urban areas, farms, prairies, roadside edges, and lightly wooded open woodlands, avoiding dense unbroken forests.

Widespread across North America, including southern Canada, the entire United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America and the Caribbean.

Serves as an important prey species for various raptors and mammals, and acts as a significant consumer and disperser of weed seeds and agricultural grains.

Mourning Doves are among the most abundant and widely hunted birds in North America. They drink by sucking up water continuously without tilting their heads back, unlike most other birds.
