Description

The Mourning Dove is a medium-sized, slender-tailed dove with a graceful appearance, soft grayish-brown plumage, and black spots on the wings. Known for its plaintive, owl-like cooing call, it is one of the most familiar and widely distributed birds in North America.

Colour & Pattern

Soft grayish-blue base with a stark, clean white tip bordered by a bold black subterminal band. The ventral side is slightly paler than the dorsal surface.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous vane structure with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, smooth and intact condition with no afterfeather.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, firm, and matte texture with strong rigidity along the vane to withstand aerodynamic forces during flight.

Key Features

A distinctive stark white tip bordered by a bold black band on a soft gray-blue outer tail feather, easily diagnostic among medium-sized birds.

Habitat

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, prairies, suburban areas, and urban parks with access to open ground and water sources.

Geographic Range

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the entire United States and into Mexico and Central America, as well as parts of the Caribbean.

Ecological Role

Serves as an important seed disperser and a primary prey species for various raptors and mammalian carnivores, acting as a crucial link in many food webs.

Similar Species

White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), though neither shares the exact outer tail pattern of the Mourning Dove.

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves produce crop milk to feed their altricial young, a specialized secretion shared by all pigeons and doves, and they are capable of drinking water without lifting their heads.

Condition Notes

Good condition, clean vane with minimal wear and no visible fault bars or parasitic damage.
