Description
The Wood Pigeon is a large, dumpy bird with a grey body and a pinkish breast. It features a distinctive white patch on the side of the neck and white wing bars visible in flight. This tail feather reflects the bird's overall grey-to-black palette used for camouflage and social signaling.
Colour & Pattern
Base color is a blue-grey gradually darkening towards the tip. A distinctive, wide blackish-brown terminal band is present at the distal end. The underside is slightly paler and more matte.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous throughout most of the vane with tightly interlocked barbs for flight stability; includes a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the base (superior umbilicus area) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and firm pennaceous surface. The feather has a characteristic matte finish common to pigeons, which produce powder down that gives the feathers a dusty, water-repellent quality.
Key Features
The gradient from light blue-grey to a thick, dark terminal band on a broad, rounded tail feather is diagnostic for Columba palumbus.
Habitat
Found in a variety of environments including woodlands, agricultural land, urban parks, and gardens. They prefer areas with large trees for nesting and open ground for foraging.
Geographic Range
Widespread across Europe (including intensive presence in Germany), North Africa, and Western Asia. Most populations are resident, though northern birds may migrate slightly south.
Ecological Role
Primary herbivore and seed disperser. They serve as a major food source for raptors like the Northern Goshawk and Peregrine Falcon.
Similar Species
Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) feathers are usually shorter and may lack the specific gradient; Stock Dove (Columba oenas) feathers are smaller and darker overall without the white neck markings of the bird itself.
Interesting Facts
Wood Pigeons produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, a secretion from the lining of the crop that is extremely rich in protein and fat. Their wings make a loud clapping sound when they take off, caused by the feathers hitting each other.
Condition Notes
Good condition. There is some minor fraying at the tip (distal end) and along the leading edge, typical of a molted feather that has seen significant use before being dropped.
