Rock Pigeon (Rock Dove, Feral Pigeon)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Columbiformes, Family: Columbidae, Genus: Columba, Species: Columba livia
Family: Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
- Shape
- Asymmetrical vane with a significantly narrower leading edge (outer vane) and a broader trailing edge (inner vane). The tip is slightly pointed/rounded, and the overall shape is elongated and slightly curved.
- Size
- Approximately 12-15 cm in length. This is consistent with the primary feathers of a standard-sized Rock Pigeon, which typically range between 11 and 16 cm.
- Rarity
- Very Common. They are one of the most abundant and easily observed bird species in the world.

Description
This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is a medium-sized, stout bird with a small head and short legs. While 'wild' types are grey with two black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers, feral populations exhibit a huge range of colors from white and cinnamon to checkered and solid black. They are known for their strong, direct flight and 'cooing' vocalizations.
Colour & Pattern
Predominantly slate-grey to charcoal-grey. The coloration is uniform along most of the vane but transitions to a darker, blackened tip. The ventral (underside) appears slightly more silver-grey due to light reflection. No distinct bars are visible on this specific specimen, typical of 'blue-bar' or 'solid' morphs.
Barb Structure
The structure is primarily pennaceous, meaning the barbs are tightly interlocked by barbules and hooklets to create a cohesive surface for flight. There is a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the base of the calamus for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat stiff to the touch, with a slightly matte to low-gloss finish. The surface is designed to be wind-resistant and relatively water-repellent due to preen oils.
Key Features
Strong asymmetry of the vanes, deep slate-grey coloration with a darker tip, and a rigid, dark rachis.
Habitat
Found in a vast variety of environments including urban centers, suburbs, agricultural fields, and rocky seaside cliffs (their ancestral habitat).
Geographic Range
Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced worldwide and are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. In agricultural areas, they can be significant seed consumers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller, more slender, and usually a warmer tan/buff color. Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are also more sandy-grey with different tip shapes.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years. They have a remarkable homing ability and were used extensively as messengers during both World Wars.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. There is some noticeable separation and fraying (splits) in the barbs along the mid-section, likely due to wear before molting or mechanical damage after being dropped.
